Musicianship Lessons

Musicianship is a funny little term that encompasses aural skills, sight reading skills, and musical sensitivity.

Musicianship classes help musicians of all kinds, from recreational to professional, hone in their skills. Skills such as aural (listening) skills can help us become more attentive to the subtleties of music. Audiation skills can help us stay in tune better, and also help us find our pitches without hearing them out loud first. Musical sensitivity can help us perform better in groups, and make our performances more dynamic and expressive. In addition to these personal benefits, many programs, such as All-State, honor choirs, and academic programs, require a sight-reading and/or aural skills exam as part of auditions. Musicianship courses can prepare you for these examinations.

I started taking musicianship courses in elementary school as part of the education requirements for the extracurricular choir I was involved in. I LOVED IT. I currently hold a bachelor of music performance from DePauw University, and I am working on my master of music at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts. I was DePauw’s musicianship tutor during the 2023-24 academic year, and with over 10 years of musicianship experience, I am sure to create an individualized curriculum for each student that is fun and beneficial. I am also familiar with the audition requirements for state hosted All-State and All-State reading choirs, and collegiate musicianship entrance examinations. Although I specialize in requirements for the singer, I can also assist instrumentalists with sung musicianship requirements.

Want to take your music skills to the next level? Want to learn how to sight-sing? Currently preparing for All-State auditions or entrance exams? I can help!
